The exterior of the gearbox measures 5 inches wide and 7 inches tall. Consider replacing this component if your trash compactor ceases operation or emits a grinding sound.
This original equipment manufacturer (OEM) gearbox is designed for compatibility with GE appliances, including Hotpoint, General Electric, and Sears-Kenmore models. It plays an essential role in the proper functioning of the compactor by facilitating gear movement. If you encounter issues with your compactor, a gearbox replacement could resolve the problem. The replacement process is relatively simple.
To proceed with the installation of the new gearbox, first disconnect the compactor from the power supply and move it away from the wall. Engage the foot pedal and pull the container drawer assembly forward, lifting it off its track. Unscrew the mounting brackets and top panel to detach them. Slide the top panel backward and remove it. Carefully position the compactor on its side and unscrew the fastenings holding the bottom panel. Detach this panel and rotate the large drive gear counterclockwise to release the ram from the power screws. Restore the compactor to its upright stance. Secure the directional switch lever away from the ram using tape. Extract the ram and remove the shields from the power screw. Take out the ram stops and washers. Install the replacement gearbox and reassemble the compactor by reversing the disassembly steps.
