Help for Appliance Troubleshooting and Repair

Deal4parts.com provides over 2 million appliance parts at our warehouses located around the country. To assist our customers in understanding common issues with household appliances, we have prepared a simple guide to narrow down the parts you may need for a repair.

When working on any electric appliances, be sure the appliance is off and unplugged from the power supply. For appliances that cannot be unplugged, make sure the breaker is off, and there is no power to the appliance before making any troubleshooting or repair attempts.

If a gas appliance is not working, contact a professional. Attempting to repair a gas appliance as a do-it-yourself project can result in damage to property, your person, and the potential for loss of life.

Electric and Gas Ranges and Ovens

Deal4parts.com offers parts and components for both electric and gas ranges.

Electric Ranges

  • Power problems
  • Check for a tripped breaker or blown fuse, replace or reset as needed.
  • Check the cord. Look for damage or burning and replace the cord and terminal block.
  • Check the electrical outlet with a voltmeter to ensure power is available, replace if needed or call an electrician.
  • Stove elements not working
    • Partial heating can mean receptacle or element plug problems. Replace as needed.
    • Look behind the control panel for the infinite switch. Check and replace if needed.
    • Inspect the element coil and look for signs of damage or holes in the coil. Replace if needed.
  • Oven not working
    • Ensure power to the stove and at the breaker or fuse panel.
    • Inspect the top and bottom elements and replace if damaged.

Gas Ranges

  • Power problems
  • Check for a tripped breaker or blown fuse; replace or reset as needed.
  • Check the cord. Look for damage or burning and replace the cord and terminal block.
  • Check the electrical outlet with a voltmeter to ensure power is available, replace if needed or call an electrician.
  • Stove elements not working
    • For pilot light issues, clean the pilot and burner.
    • For pilot-less models, call in a repair professional
  • Oven not working
    • Check the mode for the oven; it should be in manual operation and not automatic.
    • Look at the bake ignitor in the oven; no light means it is not working and needs to be replaced. A red light means a failure, and a replacement is needed.
    • Other issues should be checked by a professional repair professional.

Range Hoods

  • Fan not working
    • Check the breaker or fuse is not tripped or blown; replace or reset as needed.
    • Check power to the fan motor using a voltmeter. Replace the switch if no power registers but there is power to the appliance. If power is present, replace the fan motor.
    • If the light is not working, check the power at the socket. Replace the bulb. If that does not correct the problem, replace the socket or the switch.

Dishwashers

  • Not turning on
    • Check the power cord is still plugged in.
    • Check breaker or fuse and replace or reset as needed.
    • Make sure the door is completely closed and locked. A faulty lock or the door seal switch/sensor may be faulty, preventing it from starting.
    • Other considerations are damaged selector switches or defective cycle timers.
    • Check the lid switch to make sure it is engaging. You should hear a clicking noise with the door closes. If this is not present, the switch needs to be replaced.
  • Not draining
    • Check all belts and replace if damaged or broken.
    • Check filters and clean or replace as needed.
    • Check the line between the dishwasher and the drain and clean as needed to remove blockages.
    • Check the pump for signs of damage to the impeller or a motor that is stuck. Spin by hand to attempt to correct the problem. Replace the motor as needed.

Refrigerators

  • Power problems
  • Check for a tripped breaker or blown fuse.
  • Make sure the cord is still connected to the outlet.

  • Not cooling or staying cold
    • Clean condenser coils at the back of the fridge to remove any grease, dust, or other material.
    • Move the fridge out from the wall to allow enough air circulation.

Freezers

  • Not freezing
    • Check defrosting cycle if the freezer stays warm.
    • Remove any buildup of ice on the thermostat.
    • Replace thermostat after testing if needed.

Freezers contain Freon, a potentially harmful and deadly fluid used as a refrigerant. To avoid the risk of harm, always call in a professional for any freezer repairs.

Washing Machines

    • Does not turn on

  • Check the breaker and fuse.
  • Check the cord to make sure it is plugged in and not damaged.
  • Check the outlet using a 120v electrical tester. Call an electrician if there is no power to the outlet.
  • Check the lid switch if there is power to the washer. When closing the top or the front door, an audible click should be easy to hear. If the click is not present, the switch needs to be replaced.
  • No hot or cold water
  • Check to make sure there is water at other taps in the house.
  • Check the valves at the washer are in the on position.
  • Clean the screens at the end of the hose.
  • Not draining or filling
  • Check the position of the hose; it should be at least three feet from the floor.
  • Make sure there is no obstruction or clog in the line
  • Replace the pump or any frozen pulleys and damaged or broken belts.

Dryers

Electric Dryers

  • Not turning on
    • Check breaker, fuse, and electrical cord and outlet. Replace as needed.
    • Check the door switch is working. If it is not closing correctly or the switch is not engaging, the system will not start. Replace the switch or lever as needed.
  • Drying problems
    • Clean the lint trap, vent, and dryer vent lines. Remove any lint and clean thoroughly.
    • Check the heating element and look for damaged or loose connections.
    • Check the internal thermostat for signs of damage.

Gas Dyers

  • Not starting
    • Check breaker, fuse, and electrical cord and outlet. Replace as needed.
    • Door switch is not working. There should be an audible click when the door closes. Replace if no click is present.
    • Timer failure can also cause a problem. Replace if needed.
  • No heat or poor drying capabilities
    • Check the gas valve coils and replace if damaged.
    • Ensure the igniter is operating and replace if needed. It is easy for these components to be damaged during use or at the time of installation.
    • Check the flame sensor is working by testing as indicated in the user manual.
    • Ensure the dryer lint trap, vent, and exterior vent are open and free from lint.
    • Ensure the thermostat is operating correctly and replace if needed.
