How It Works
The motor sits in the dryer section of the laundry center. Its pulley drives the belt that turns the drum, and the opposite end of the shaft spins the blower wheel that moves heated air through the clothes and out the vent. A worn motor slows both, so you get a drum that struggles or stops and loads that come out damp.

Replacing the Motor
- Unplug the laundry center, and shut off the gas on gas models.
- Open the panels to reach the dryer motor, following your service manual.
- Release the idler pulley and slide the belt off the motor.
- Photograph and unplug the motor wiring.
- Unscrew the blower wheel from the shaft. It's reverse-threaded, so turn it clockwise to loosen.
- Release the motor clamps and lift out the old motor.
- Fit the new motor, thread the blower wheel back on, reconnect the wiring and reinstall the belt.
- Close up the unit, restore power and gas, and test with a short dry cycle.
Tools: a #2 square drive bit or Phillips screwdriver, a large flat-head screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, a 5/16-inch nut driver and your phone camera. Allow 1-1/2 to 2 hours.
Keep the Dryer Running
- Empty the lint screen every load.
- Clean the full vent line yearly. Closet laundry centers often have long, tight runs.
- Keep loads moderate for the smaller drum.
- Replace a squeaky idler pulley or worn belt while the unit is open.
